WeSwim is a London-based organisation providing accessible swimming opportunities for people with disabilities. With 80% of disabled individuals expressing a desire to be more active, WeSwim addresses the significant barriers they face, including transport issues, financial constraints, and a lack of inclusive facilities. Their mission is to offer a safe and supportive environment where disabled people can enjoy swimming while building a sense of community.
Since its founding in 2021, WeSwim has operated in some of London’s most deprived areas. It supports people with a wide range of disabilities, including physical, learning, and visual impairments, who often find it difficult to access mainstream swimming sessions. By running specialised sessions tailored to their needs, WeSwim helps disabled people improve their physical health, mental well-being, and confidence.
WeSwim operates across five locations in London: Crouch End, Tottenham, Old Street, Barbican, and Vauxhall. They have delivered more than 1,500 swims this year already. Their work is supported by 134 volunteers who provide one-on-one assistance to members, helping them feel comfortable in the water.
The impact of WeSwim is clear: 100% of participants have reported improved physical fitness, greater confidence, and stronger social connections. The organisation’s substantial waiting lists, with around 40 people at each pool, highlight the demand for accessible swimming opportunities. This growing need highlights the essential role WeSwim plays in promoting both physical and mental well-being for people with disabilities across London.
The £2,000 awarded from Grants for Good will be used to cover costs such as venue hire, equipment, and volunteer expenses, ensuring that more people across London can benefit from its inclusive swimming sessions.
We are humbled that you trust us to spend your money wisely and thank you for believing in what we are trying to achieve. Sometimes it is the smallest things that mean the most – the care packs, whilst such a small thing, can be just what a young person needs to help them find meaning and help them to start valuing their lives. From the bottom of our hearts: thank you
