Operationally Carbon Neutral Since 2022
John Good Group is proud to announce that we have achieved operational carbon neutrality across all our businesses as of 2022. This significant milestone demonstrates our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible business practices, setting a new standard in our industry.
What is Operational Carbon Neutrality?
Operational carbon neutrality means that we have balanced the carbon emissions from our direct business operations with an equivalent amount of carbon offsets or removals. This includes emissions from our offices, vehicles, and other company-owned assets across John Good & Sons, Good Travel Management, Dan Shipping & Chartering, TEPS, and Bay Shipping.
Ongoing Commitment and Reduction Plans
Achieving operational carbon neutrality is just the beginning of our sustainability journey. We are actively implementing carbon reduction programs across our businesses, which include:
- RInvesting in renewable energy generation
- RIntroducing hybrid and electric vehicles
- RReviewing and optimising our supplier network
- RDeveloping people-focused initiatives to reduce carbon-contributing factors, such as commuting miles
We recognise the challenges that lie ahead, particularly in our largest carbon-producing business, TEPS, where industry technological developments are still evolving. Despite constraints such as the limited availability of suitable vehicle alternatives and restrictions on exporting surplus solar energy, we remain committed to pushing for progress.
Our Journey to Carbon Neutrality
Working with the leading audit, tax, and consulting firm RSM, we measured and reported our carbon footprint for 2022. This comprehensive approach ensures accuracy and transparency in our sustainability efforts.
To offset our residual emissions, we partnered with Climate Impact Partners to purchase carbon credits. Together, we selected initiatives that not only address climate change but also make significant contributions to local communities, including:
- PRural Clean Cooking in India
- PRimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve REDD++ in Indonesia
- PMudbrick Rocket Stoves in Malawi
- PDegraded Grasslands Afforestation in Uruguay
These projects align with several UN Sustainable Development Goals that we are committed to, including No Poverty (SDG 1), Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3), Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), and Climate Action (SDG 13).
Beyond Operational Emissions
We are not stopping at operational carbon neutrality. For our non-operational Scope 3 emissions, which are significantly larger, we are engaging with both customers and suppliers to explore innovative solutions. In our travel business, for instance, we have introduced carbon insights at the point of booking and provided sustainability training for our team.
A Planet-First Business Approach
Our commitment to carbon neutrality is part of our broader planet-first business strategy. We hold a profound respect for the environment, from local communities to the global ecosystem. By achieving operational carbon neutrality in 2022, John Good Group has taken a significant step toward a more sustainable future.
We remain dedicated to continually improving our environmental performance, focusing on reduction strategies, and inspiring others in our industry to join us in shaping a greener future. Through engagement, collaboration, and leadership within our sectors, we aim to challenge and influence broader industries to make a lasting positive impact on our planet.
