My Journey – Chloe Lawson, Junior People Advisor
Going to University:
I started my undergraduate degree in Business and HR Management at Sheffield Hallam University in September 2020. I was interested in this Business degree due to the heavy focus on HR, enabling me to earn my HR professional accreditation alongside my degree, resulting in a CIPD Level 5 qualification upon graduation. The shift from completing a year of Primary education teacher training and realising my career path was heading elsewhere, I was excited to pursue a path that had lots of career scope and growth opportunities.
Balancing Experience Alongside a Degree
During my degree, I actively sought out HR-related work experiences. Following my first year at University, I successfully completed a HR internship in 2021. I also volunteered as Talent Acquisition Lead at a charity, Teenage Helpline, before joining Victoria Plum as a People Assistant in Spring of 2022, where I had the pleasure of meeting Rach.
Meeting Rach
Rach and I worked together at Victoria Plum within the People team, where I supported her and the People Manager with various day-to-day functions and one-off projects. Rach was always extremely supportive of me in my role and always encouraged me to expand my skills and gain as much experience as possible.
Joining the John Good Group:
As my final semester approached, I started planning for what my career journey was going to look like after graduation. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect when Rach and I met up to discuss her new and exciting role as CPO at the John Good Group, and her plans to expand the team. We discussed the opportunity of joining JGG and the newly established People team, and from that moment I was sold on the values and vision for the future, both for the People team and the company.
Development Plan:
With an understanding of my skill set, experiences, and interests within HR, Rach presented me with an outstanding learning and development roadmap to level up my skills and role as Junior People Advisor. The plan includes managing team projects, undertaking CPD courses, observing the day-to-day operations, and gaining additional qualifications to expand the knowledge I’ve gained from my degree.
The Journey at JGG:
I started my role as Junior People Advisor at JGG in May 2023 and I have had the best experience so far. Every person I have met has been so warm and welcoming, creating a true family feel that comes with being a long-established family business. With the People team having so many exciting projects lined up and frameworks to put in place, I can already feel my confidence growing within the role and my professional experience developing even further. I am so excited and proud to be part of an incredible business with huge plans in the pipeline and I am looking forward to further developing my career post-University with John Good Group.
